Honey and the Harvest

Yesterday’s Farmer’s Market theme was Honey and the Harvest! Did you know that, on average, a single honeybee makes only 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime? Here are a few more fun little facts:

-A honeybee visits 2 million flowers to make a single pound of honey.

-The honeybee visits 50-100 flowers on each collection trip.

-A honeybee has five eyes and four wings.

-The honeybee is the only insect to produce food that is consumed by people.

-Honey NEVER EVER goes bad. (Even if it crystallizes, all you have to do is heat it up and it’s good as new!)

-There are more than 300 floral sources of honey within the United States.

-Honey’s color is determined by the floral source.
